What is a bariatric dumping?
It is a process that occurs by eating quickly hypercaloric foods (high in calories) or with a high content of simple carbohydrates, and which pass from the stomach to the intestine unexpectedly.
Dumping syndrome, also known as dumping syndrome, is a side effect associated with gastric surgery.
It occurs when food moves too quickly from the stomach to the small intestine.
Dumping syndrome can be treated through basic diet and lifestyle changes.
Bariatric surgery alters the digestive tract or reduces the size of the stomach.
In many cases, the body takes time to adjust to these changes.
Dumping syndrome is the result of an inability to regulate the movement of food due to these changes.
What happens is that the food empties from the stomach into the small intestine before it is finished digesting.
This is usually caused by foods that absorb water from the body quickly, such as fried foods and refined sugars.
Specific symptoms will arise from when the food is emptied, either early or late in the digestive process.
How does dumping appears?
It can occur half an hour after eating (Early Dumping Syndrome).
Early stage dumping syndrome occurs 30 to 60 minutes after eating. Symptoms can last up to an hour and include: Abdominal painFeeling full despite eating a very small amountfast heart rateSweating, flushing, or dizzinessnausea or vomitingsevere diarrheaIn addition to rapid water absorption, stretching of the small intestine and early release of hormones can also trigger early-stage dumping syndrome.
It can also appear 2 or 3 hours later (Late Dumping Syndrome) remitting symptoms in most cases gradually and spontaneously.
Symptoms may include: flushing or sweatingweakness or fatiguedizziness or faintingfast heart rateMental confusionlower concentrationHunger This type of dumping syndrome is often the result of a rapid rise and fall in blood sugar levels. Therefore, some common culprits are refined sugars found in foods like barbecue sauce, tomato sauce, and fruit juices.
What to do in case of dumping?
The first step is dietary measures:
- Eat 6 times a day to avoid large gastric overloads.
- Limit fluid intake during the meal.
- Drink liquid 1 hour before and one after meals.
- Rest for 15 minutes after meals which prevents rapid emptying.
- Lactose-free milk and yogurt.
- Avoid foods high in sugar such as sweets, cakes and soft drinks.
- Avoid simple carbohydrates like bread and pasta.
- Avoid alcoholic beverages.
- Completely chew the food.
- Eat fewer meals a day and in smaller portions.
- Avoid some sugar substitutes and foods advertised as “sugar free.”
- Incorporate more whole grains into your diet
- Eat more lean proteins like turkey and chicken
