Exercise after a bariatric procedure

Obesity is a very significant public health issue in the 21st century seeing as it holds a very close relationship with long term consequences and health complications. Although bariatric surgery is used as a therapeutic measure against obesity, it is important that we understand that it is part of a multidisciplinary approach to helping you reach your weight goals in a healthy way.

Ideally, bariatric surgery comes into play when all other roads to health have been exhausted and we can help you get back on track on your health journey.

Exercise and physical activity is a big part of any weight loss plan, and in a bariatric setting, it helps us maximize the quantity and quality of the benefits resulting from your procedure, such as reaching and staying at your target weight, better control of the glucose metabolism and lowering bodily aches.

Undergoing a bariatric procedure poses a big challenge on the body, as we modify our lifestyle, our eating habits and the physical activity we’ve been used to doing for a long period of time.

Exercise during the weight loss changes is optimal to boost the body into a faster metabolism and healing.

Our team of professionals strongly recommends that low impact aerobic exercise is a part of your routine starting at the earliest possible stage in a gradual progression.

Start with low impact calm walks.

Level up with aerobic exercise like longer walks and swimming after the 3rd week.

High intensity and higher impact exercise is gradually added after the 3rd month post surgery.

On a small scale, exercise alone will help us in three main ways, it physiologically helps regulate the glucose metabolism, significantly helping control any glucose imbalances (such as pre/diabetes and insulin resistance), it helps promote oxygen flow to peripheral tissues and has a positive impact on mood regulating hormones, helping with a better attitude and motivation to stay on track.

On a bigger scale, if we can manage to keep even a simple low impact exercise routine on the aftercare period of our surgery, the outcome will be positively affected and our chances at reaching a healthier weight faster will be greater.
