We previously spoke about your weight number, and how it may change meaning during the aftermath of your bariatric surgery, but what about when it settles and there’s no more visible changes in your body?
It’s normal and almost expected for patients to regain some of that lost weight back once your body and metabolism settle into their new environment. Up to 50% of patients experience a small amount of weight gain two years or more after their bariatric procedure, whoever MOST bariatric patients are able to maintain successful weight-loss long term.
Like we have mentioned, bariatric surgery is not a solution or a magic pill. It’s a tool, and when used correctly, it can make your journey to a healthy weight and lifestyle that much easier. The goal of bariatric surgery when accompanied by a multidisciplinary team is to give you all the tools we can to help you make better and healthier choices.
While the surgery is a big part of the process, it’s not the only one. The reason behind seeing a Nutritionist before, during and after your procedure, is to learn how to properly choose the best food options for your new circumstances. Your food intake will be diminished, so we need to make sure the little amounts of food you’re consuming are of good quality.
On the other hand, the reason for your psychology visits before and after your surgery is to better the relationship with food, so that not only you’re making good choices, but you feel good about it!
Like your weight before any procedure, once your metabolism adjusts to a new baseline, it’s okay for your weight to shift 5 to 8 pounds up or down during certain periods of time, but if you use the tools we gave you, continue your nutritionist appointments and follow your diet suggestions, as well as work out according to your abilities, the weight you dropped, will stay off.
Remember, your team is here to help you. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you’re having any doubts!
